Box-1 Thyroid and Pregnancy

  1. Thyroid disease in pregnancy is not uncommon,
  2. Careful planning before conception and close supervision is important for successful outcome
  3. Untreated Graves Disease has unfavourable outcome to both the mother and baby.

    Mother’s TSH should be kept in the low normal range,
  4. Replacement doses of thyroxine increase in pregnancy in cases of primary hypothyroidism,
  5. Mothers fT4 should be kept in the high normal range.
