Case 1. A neck swelling

Miss ABC, a 28-year-old software engineer, had developed a small diffuse shaped swelling in the neck. Her colleague, Miss XYZ told her that it could be a thyroid swelling. Thus, Miss ABC went to see a doctor, who ordered thyroid function tests and told Miss ABC that her TSH was very high, her T4 levels were very low and that she had hypothyroidism. The doctor started her on a small tablet called levothyroxine, and soon Miss ABC felt much better. Earlier, Miss ABC had been feeling very tired and fatigued all the time and she was tired of feeling tired all the time!! But after starting on the tiny little pill called levothyroxine, Miss ABC became more energetic and active. She began to work harder, her brains appeared to have become sharper, and soon, she obtained the promotion that had been eluding her mysteriously for the lat 4 years. From then on, she meticulously checked her blood tests for thyroid function, keeping them normal with the help of the doctor’s advice

Comment:  Many patients with hypothyroidism may not know that they are unwell, until the disease comes to light by a good diagnosis by their doctor. Though, the patients feel that they do not need medication, once the therapy is started, they often begin to realize what they'd been missing. Even the correction of very mild thyroid failure can sometimes have a positive impact on the quality of life. The treatment of thyroid failure or hypothyroidism is a small tablet called levothyroxine. These tablets are available in various strengths and the dose needs to be readjusted to keep the blood levels of the thyroid-related hormones within normal limits.
