Case 2. A case of unexplained constipation

Mrs. KKK, a 45-year-old housewife, had been suffering from constipation for a long time. She had tried various doctors, and various therapies including several indigenous drugs without relief. Ultimately, a doctor ordered thyroid function tests and told her that she needed to take levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. Over the next 2 months of levothyroxine therapy, the constipation soon improved. Surprisingly, she noticed that her menstrual periods, which had earlier been irregular (due to menopause, she had assumed), were now becoming regular. And she was fast losing weight and becoming slimmer. She began to feel more alive, and restarted enjoying the little things in life like a walk down the beach, and a visit to the local aerobics center.

Comment:  Hypothyroidism may present with unusual problems, like constipation. The manifestations of hypothyroidism are so diverse that virtually any system in the body can be affected. Menstrual cycles are exquisitely sensitive to changes in thyroid function, and correction of hypothyroidism with levothyroxine can be very beneficial. Finally, hypothyroidism is associated with weight gain as well as high cholesterol levels, and replacement with levothyroxine is very helpful.
